How to Recognize Correctly Sized Bras

You recognize correctly sized bras by the fact that they don't really feel like anything. When the bra band is suitably snug, it does not chafe or squeeze. Most of the support offered by bras comes from the correctly sized band, and the straps' job is to distribute only a small part of the weight of the breasts to the shoulders. In correctly sized bras, the underwires do not rub or poke through clothes; instead, the underwires should sit against the ribcage along their entire length. When the cup size is suitable, nothing spills over anywhere, and you don't need to adjust or shake your breasts back into the cups throughout the day.

One of the most common mistakes is to wear bras where the band size is too large and the cup too small. A band that is too loose rubs easily when the bras get to rotate around the body instead of sitting snugly in place. A band that is too loose also causes the back of the bra to ride up the back, shifting the weight of the breasts onto the shoulders via the straps. When the weight of the breasts shifts to the shoulders, the straps can press painful marks and grooves into the shoulders over the years, also causing back, shoulder, and neck pain.

How many bras do I need?

We recommend that you have at least three well-fitting bras in use, depending slightly on your daily life, perhaps for slightly different purposes: for example, one smooth "every situation" t-shirt bra, one comfortable everyday bra that is pleasant to wear, and either a slightly dressier or more decorative bra or a sports bra. For everyday use, it would be good to have two or three pairs so that, in addition to the ones you are wearing, at least one pair is recovering from washing, and so that you don't have to wear the exact same bras every day, as they need washing and rest after at least a couple of days of use.

And how often should bras be replaced?

On average, bras last about a hundred wears, depending on usage and how you maintain and wash them. With regular use, bras last 6-12 months when you have at least two or three pairs that you rotate. The more pairs you have in use, the less frequently a single bra gets worn, so high-quality bras can last even for years. If, on the other hand, you use one pair of bras almost every day, they can wear out quickly, even in 3-4 months. When the band starts to feel stretched, the cups have lost their shape, or the materials are worn, it is certainly time to get new ones!
